The end of second year of college for the girls... where does the time go. Just waiting of grades. Both have boyfriends (oh my god when did they grow up). Need to de-clutter... to much stuff. Having a garage sale (that is just so funny).

Knitting, trying to get all the WIP's done so I can cast on new things. I still love socks and shawls. Finished a pair for one girl and cast on 2 at a time for each girl. One red one blue. Makes it easier to recognize I just knit them together. I also finished the Drachenfels Shawl.

Spinning, haven't really been doing much. I think I will bring my bobbin and flyer to Hemlock if the guy is there this year. Still don't like merino. I have a ton of it...

Gardening, well gonna try to fire up the rototiller and expand the garden. Right? I need more space for weeds. Have to move the roses and the strawberry garden is collapsing. I need to shore up the patio concrete soon. The whole hill is sliding. Also looking to put in a water feature this year. Who knows where.

Photography,
Okay a bit ambitious but I have a really nice camera and I need to start using it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-25516064081155733662015-08-24T19:23:00.000-04:002015-08-24T19:23:35.009-04:00Second Year of College to beginWell year number two is fast approaching. I don't have the anxiety of last year, but I am stressing about getting everything up there again. Best thing the girls did was rent a storage locker up the street from the college. Not sure how we will get it all home after the last year, but I got it there, so I can car tetris it home!

Knitting, I have started another project and I have not finished anything currently on my needles. MMMM I just get bored or the draw of a pattern is just to great.

Spinning, I did another braid and am going to leave it as singles. I did wind off the alpaca and I think I will Navajo ply it. I have another bump of alpaca in brown that I think I will try to match and knit some warm winter gear for Hubby and I.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-5410887732937235672015-06-20T11:31:00.000-04:002015-06-20T11:31:08.694-04:00Almost a year gone by...Well I am definitely not a blogger.

Knitting, I am puttering along and finding tons I want to do with tons on the needles. Nothing really accomplished. I have one thing I want to do for an up coming wedding....

Spinning, I did spin another braid of fiber. The picture is not the greatest. It is really the colors of Neapolitan ice cream. I will add it to my stash.

I have some alpaca on the CPW right now. I need to find more bobbins. I only have one. This means shipping parts to a wood smith and trusting USPS and the wood smith to get it back to me in one piece... I don't know if I have that kind of trust. the wheel is over 100 years old ( I think).

Gardening, Love the rain, Hate the weeds. I think I have poison ivy in my front bushes. We have had strawberries and lettuce from our edible gardens. I had to fence it this year. The cats love the fresh dug dirt and the varmints love the tender veggies.

Family, the girls did amazing! They made new friends, are more outgoing, and Both made Deans list. DH found a more permanent job (although on nights) and we are finally getting some breathing room.

I hope to settle into our new routine and get some things done around the house. Some new paint, a new carpet....

I guess that is all for now. Until I think of posting again.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-64449766055290944722014-08-23T08:51:00.001-04:002014-08-23T08:51:54.748-04:00Where to begin....
My children went off to college yesterday. I feel sadness and joy, fear and peace, but most of all I feel accomplishment.
My husband and I have successfully raised good kids and I have full confidence they will succeed in life. It is time now for them to find their way on their own, but we will always be there to support them.

I am the most proud parent right now!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-70062437424226681462013-09-16T19:28:00.001-04:002013-09-16T19:28:26.933-04:00Blogging is not my strong suit.I just really don't think I have much to say. I really want to chronicle my journey, but I struggle with content.
I have decided that fiber arts are the way I need to go. It is visceral. I NEED to spin and knit. I NEED the feel of the natural fiber slipping through my fingers. With every fiber of my being, I NEED fiber.
Looking at pictures of fiber and yarn gets my creativity going. I pick patterns and then decide how to modify them to best fit my needs.
I would love to design in the future, but I feel I need more time with the fiber. Time to learn the ways each fiber is different, how they behave, and what works with what patterns.
I also want to dye fiber and yarn. I don't think I have an eye for color or how the dyed fiber will look spun or the yarn knit.
For now knitting and spinning will feed my soul.
I have been knitting and have a case of cast on-itis. I just have to start all the things. I am still working on Jenn's sweater. I have one and a half sleeves and the collar. Then I will cast on for Ashh's sweater. I have the fishy socks on the needles. The lips are done and connected with about 1 inch of the leg done. I will have to weigh the skein as I go because I don't think I will have enough for 2 socks and the fins. We will see. I spun 2 braids of Highland Handmades Falkland in the Dionysus colorway. the first was Navajo plied and then the other was fractal spun and 2 plied. Love them both.
The fiber was a joy to spin. I highly recommend stalking her shop to get some fiber! She is also a talented designer. I think next on the wheel will be some Fibernymph. I just love her stuff too!
I am going to Tennessee this summer to SSK!
I am so excited. The retreat is paid for and I am booked on my flight.
Enough for now...
Hopefully I can get into this blogging again.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-15852000049271440502012-07-11T10:45:00.002-04:002012-07-11T10:45:55.245-04:00From Alpaca Hell to some nice yarnWell I finished the dirty alpaca fiber and Navajo Plied it to the tune of 255 yards of a dk weight. It is kinda rustic thick and thin, and I'm thinking about a cowl or small scarf. I am not sure of the color though. I may give dyeing a try. LaLa from The Knit Girllls podcast said acid dyes are good. So I will check out the Knitpicks starter set.
Working on The Dragon Tongue socks still. On the gusset almost to the heel turn on sock #2. I have to reconfigure the pattern to mirror the first. A LOT OF WRITING! But it is turning out well and I am seeing how what I do to a stitch will affect how it looks. I will ask the designer if I can post my written instructions to go with her charts on the blog.
Garden is going gangbusters! I'm going to have tons of tomatoes, I'm down to 3 heads of lettuce. One has bolted and the other three are getting close. I am going to try to save seeds for next year, but in my gardens, lettuce is a perennial. The zucchini is prolific of course, but the yellow squash is just not producing well. Cucumbers are growing tons of flowers but I only have 3 cukes.
Here are some picks of the yarn I finished.
Went for a walk. It has been a while since I walked for exercise, but I walked 3.52 miles in 48.01 minutes. that works out to about 13.37 min/mile. Pretty good for some one so out of shape. My goal is to do the route in 30 minutes or less. Decided that the weight won't come off by itself and I am tired of feeling crappy.

So my reward? Gardening and then spinning and knitting.

I did finish and ship out my Knit Girllls Afghan square #2 and Yesterday I finished my third afghan square. Just need an address now to send it out. May start #4 tonight. Here are the previous ones I did. I'll post more pics when my partners get their packages in the remaining rounds.

I finally finished DH's Sweater!!! Sleeves are on, but they are too long. May need to shorten them. Will see with some washes first.

I have more fiber to spin. This will be a gift so no pics until it is done. I am working on my alpaca fiber purchase. I am trying long draw, but the fiber was filthy. Loads of veggie matter (at least I hope it was veggie). I combed and carded the fiber again (with slicker brushes and mane combs from central tractor) it is cleaner, but now it is in smaller bits and lets just say I am getting a lot of practice adding in fiber as I spin. Would also help if I spun at the same ratio as the first 2oz.

So purest fiber preppers look away...
I tried to price fiber combs and hand carders online and WOW! I can't afford that. I don't plan on processing my own fiber anytime soon. SO I was thinking that the had cards look like dog brushes (really big dog brushes) and the combs you just need to have something hold the fiber while you use another to straighten the fiber and pull out all the bad bits (the mane and tail pullers look like they may work)

Tractor Supply here I come.

Center is my Ashford Flick Carder with my new hand "carders" and "combs"

I know they are not optimal. I get small rolags and combing takes some time, but and it is a big but, for the amount of fiber processing I plan on doing in the foreseeable future 26 bucks beats the price of the real carders and combs. Heck I paid 20 for the Ashford flick carder. So until I can afford the right tools I will make sure I don't buy a raw fleece and I will make sure the fiber is cleaner than the one I just bought.

Have a great day

I have been knitting and spinning a bit. The gardens are looking good. I have decided I am a very fine spinner. I have trouble making thick yarn that is. I guess that is okay since I am still in the mode of "I need to get the most yardage out of this fiber". I need to sew on the sleeves of DH's sweater. UGH!! I just can't seem to sit and do it. I also need to finish the second sock of Dragon's Tongue for DD. I did join the afghan square swap with the knit girls. That group are nothing but a bunch of enablers... AND I LOVE IT.
LOVE IT. I have already spun 2 one ounce bumps of fiber on the Girllls list and I am working on another. I know I have 2 months to spin each type of wool, but being a new spinner I am giving every thing a try so I can learn my wheel and fibers. I ended up with 55 yards of Grey Masham and 65 yards of Shetland Humbug. There is some thick and thin in the yarn, but it is pretty well balanced as a plied yarn. I plied 2 singles of the Masham and Navajo plied the Shetland. I am pleased with the Shetland. Here are some pics.
I am also working on Gush or Dragon Tongue Socks a sweater for Wiley and a Scarf for my favorite "Wicked" step mother. No really I love her dearly!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-6308537600872823462012-01-25T13:06:00.001-05:002012-01-25T13:06:59.484-05:00A Day OffToday I am taking a day off... Well a bit of laundry some vacuuming, but no work. We are having FIL over for dinner. I will be knitting on the remainder of yarn from SIL gloves. I am hoping to have enough for a buttoned very small scarf. Still at the same point on the socks for DD #1 and the sleeves are still needing to be sewn on. Guess I am having finishers remorse on that sweater. I finished Multnomah in 5 days and got it blocked and photo graphed last night and today. I love it. DD's want to wear it as camouflage. Yeah a nice lace shawl in the woods...NOT!
I am pleased at how soft the yarn is all washed. I am really loving this shawl. I hope to wear it soon.

We are headed to SIL's this weekend to help her celebrate her birthday. Can't wait. Maybe even a trip to the Erie Mall for some Shopping!!!
Well off to meander and switch loads...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-43659612071509564612012-01-18T20:23:00.000-05:002012-02-06T14:20:28.436-05:00Starting NewWell I have decided that Yvaine is just not working for the Cloudlover Haunted Vineyard Yarn. So I frogged it today and began the Multnomah by Kate Ray. I think Yvaine's stitch patterns were just lost with the yarn colors.
I have received some fiber from Three Waters Farm. It is 4oz of BFL top in the Couture colorway. I think this may be a bit later in my spinning career as it doesn't draft super easily. I am sure it is just me, but I love the colors and i would like to make some pretty yarn and not the thick and thin coiled mess I just recently made.
I also received 3 4oz bumps of Merino Wool Top from WCMercantile. I got the Merlot, Pickle, and Patina colorways. It is very soft and it may be the next thing on the wheel following my education with my sampler of fiber from Woolgatherings.
In the Woolgatherings sampler I got 1 oz of each of 16 breeds. They are Romeldale, Polworth, Wensleydale, Black Jacob, Falkland, Brown Merino, Corriedale Cross, Grey Gotland, Shetland, Finnish, Icelandic, Grey Masham, Devon, Black Welsh, Cheviot, and Cormo. I think I am going to start with the more scratchy stuff so if it doesn't work out, I won't be to disappointed.
Still working on the Socks and the sleeves are still not sewn in. Oh well... Off to do the laundry and more knitting on MultnomahAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-52093602057865937782012-01-17T02:56:00.000-05:002012-01-17T12:30:03.207-05:00Spinning, Knitting, and RememberingWell I have made my first yarn and knitted a scarf for my DS dog Wiley. He is a nut and absolutely loves it. It is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. Lotsa thick and thin, a few over spun wiggly parts sticking out but all in all.... oh who am I kidding it is hideous. LOL
I am still working on the sweater still have to sew in the sleeves. I finished the gloves for my sister in law, at least I will make her birthday. Still knitting on Yvaine. I have finished a pair of socks for DD #2 and I have cast on a Pair for DD #1. We call it Dragon's Tongue and it is done in Red hand painted Cascade Heritage. The pattern is "Gush" by Yarnissima Marjan Hammink. It is up on my Rav project page.

My big thing this post is I have figured out my Grandma Genevieve's Mile-a-Minute Afghan. Every one in the family has one in all its acrylic glory. Mine is pink, Mom's was teal, and DS's is dark blue(I think).
And here it is for any one who wants one too.
Just a warning I am not a pattern writer nor do I play one on TV. This pattern is for personal use ONLY!

So here it goes...

(C6B) (C6F)

Pattern repeat is 18 stitches
You can use any yarn and any size needles. This is an example of unknown yarn type in about a sport or DK weight I cast on 37 stitches with the center stitch being a purl stitch.
When Gma knit the pattern she made strips and then sewed them together and added fringe to the cast on and off edges. I don't like seaming so I added a purl stitch between pattern repeats. In order the carry all the weight, you will need a large cable needle to work back and forth without doing damage to the carpal tunnel all knitters tend to aggravate.

Strip Instructions

Cast on 18 stitches
Row 1 (RS): K4, P2, K6, P2, K4
Row 2: (WS): K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2
Row 3-6: Repeat Rows 1 and 2
Row 7: K4, P2, C6F, P2, K4 (you can also C6B if you prefer)
Row 8: K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2

Abbreviations
K=Knit
P=Purl
C6F=Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in front. Knit next 3 stitches, then knit 3 stitches from cable needle.
C6B=Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back. Knit next 3 stitches, then knit 3 stitches from cable needle.

If you want to do all the strips at once Cast on a multiple of 18 stitches plus an extra stitch minus 1 for each repeat. i.e. 2 repeats you would cast on 37 sts, 3 repeats 56 sts, 4 repeats 75 sts (I hope).

I am not sure if this pattern is published anywhere, this is what my Gma taught me through her swatches that were left to me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-57377359242674928862011-12-10T14:15:00.001-05:002011-12-10T14:25:04.927-05:00Spinning Spinning KnittingWell it took some time to make friends, but I can now operate my wheel. (ish) I will need a lot of practice but I have made yarn singles. She is fast and if I get to cocky, she will break my yarn. I am still thinking of a name for her as is customary for new wheels and their owners. I think a name from the 1800's would suit her.
Adeline, Coraline... I am not sure.
Knitting up a storm, finished the knitting on DH's Sweater, Just have to sew in the sleeves. Finished Summer Mystery Shawl for the SSK KAL and started the Knit Girllls KAL with my Haunted Vineyard Yarn. I chose to do Yvaine by Liz Abinante I am also knitting a pair of Froot Loop Gloves by Natasha Sills for my SIL. I still have to finish the heel and cuff of one sock for DD and start another pair for other DD. Phew Good thing the only things due by Christmas will be the gloves!
Well time for another Day of work.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-40909627352083536252011-12-03T09:14:00.001-05:002011-12-03T09:18:36.822-05:00Spinning My WheelsOMG I got a spinning wheel!!!
It is a late 1800 to 1930ish unsigned Vezina Canadian Production Wheel. She is GORGEOUS! and in fabulous condition. I only paid 90 bucks for her at auction and also got a vintage skein winder in good shape. The skein winder even still has most of her square head nails.
Both are functioning, but I need to learn to spin yarn before I can use the skein winder LOL
I tried to move 2 rose bushes that suddenly appeared in another garden, but I broke the tap root on one too close to the plant, so I think that one is done for. The other one is looking pretty pitiful, but I think it may survive. I have 2 more flats of plants and flowers to go into the ground so I am going to finish my chores so I can get out and dig.
Knitting is getting a work out also. I have turned the heel on the recast on sock and I am doing the gussett decreases. Seems that the sock will fit better this time. Also I have been putting on some rows on the back of DH's sweater. I have 2 more inches to get to his shoulders and then I can bind off and pick up the front. Not sure how to do the short rows, but I will figure it out. The circle sweater is coming along and I am getting good at turning cables without a cable needles. Now if I could only remember the pattern, it would go sooo much faster.
Well I had better stop procrastinating and get going, I do have to work today also...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-42500683146111740312011-05-29T12:57:00.000-04:002011-05-29T12:57:59.345-04:00Wet Wet WetOMG is it wet here. I has rained just about every day since the snow melted. I am having to dig in wet mud, the weeds are humungus (good thing it makes for more to yank on while trying to dislodge that huge root). The up side is when I replant, I don't need to water. The hole is already saturated with water.
Had to move the garden this year. The pine trees the original owner planted have grown up and put that garden into mostly shade. I can now move my shade garden on the side of the house back there and enjoy it from the patio.

On the knitting front, I finished a sock for my nephew and when he tried it on I promptly ripped it out. The kid has huge feet, but not that big!!!! O'well. Restarted with 4 fewer stitches and going to knit 1/4 to 1/2 in shorter on the foot. Gonna have DH try on his sweater again to see if the back is long enough to bind off the shoulders and add in some short rows for the collar.
I started the Cable-Go-Round sweater by Heather Lodinski in Cervinia Sorrento. I missed the errata, but I like the pattern on the inner side just fine. May be a bit sewing in the sleeves as the fabric will be a little bit different.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-86501834665602988322011-05-21T09:26:00.000-04:002011-05-21T09:26:27.460-04:00Well....Life is finally looking up. DH made it thru another layoff (we get them every 6mos). I have been selected for some projects at work and I am really busy, but it is another feather in my cap on my way up the ladder.
I am knitting socks like crazy. And yes I am still working on DH's Sweater. Good news so far it fits him very well. Had to make some modifications in the original pattern set up, but I think it will turn out well. I also finished my first lace shawlette. (was to be a shawl). I have started a circular cabled shrug. I am have a blast knitting and I am finally truly madly addicted.
I purchased a drop spindle from knit picks and have tried to teach my self spinning. With a bit of help from youtube, I think I have the hang of it, I just need to practice.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-44957254048381493892011-02-20T12:27:00.000-05:002011-02-20T12:27:22.043-05:00Thank God for the New Year2010 ended absolutely horribly. The entire year was filled with struggles and losses. The knitting lessons with my niece didn't go well at all either, but maybe in the future we can try again. The girls have the knit stitch down, but still no interest. I think if I can get the girls to show an interest, my niece will be interested to try again.
I am still working on DH's sweater, but I had to restart it as it didn't fit... Forgot to switch up to the right size needle once the ribbing was done. Not all was lost, I realized I had chosen the wrong size for him anyway. The new sweater will be a bit big, but once it is washed and blocked, it should fit perfectly. If not, I'm felting it and making it big enough for me.
On to 2011 (which started out where 2010 left off). It can only get better from here on out (I hope)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-22337588662565884692010-12-02T09:51:00.000-05:002010-12-02T09:51:47.803-05:00OH BOYLife can be so complicated sometimes. I am so glad I have found knitting. I just wish I had found it earlier. I am going to try to teach my niece to knit. My girls show little interest. Maybe because it is frustrating to start. Still working on DH's sweater and yes he already has a buck. O well... Now Christmas is upon us and I am still so far behind. At least I have a vacation coming up. Phew... Then off to Delware for training. Then Christmas boy o boy. Well enough on the computer must get cleaning so I can knit later.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-76786711806812521692010-11-10T22:38:00.000-05:002010-11-10T22:38:15.013-05:00Knit Knit KnitWell today was not so bad... Very long day at work to come home to only one sick kid (my DH). Fixed an ok dinner and then sat down to watch Ghost Hunters and knit on Tom's Wool Sweater. I am making it for deer season, but I am sure it will have to be for next year or very late in the season... considering opening day is on the 20th. Going out this weekend with friends to celebrate birthdays and life in general. Can't wait.
I need to start reconnecting with friends and family and this is a great way to start. There will be other couples I haven't met, so it will be fun.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09981479244497861016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2838897189028948751.post-56980909998294779592010-11-09T15:07:00.000-05:002010-11-09T15:07:22.437-05:00First blogWell I have finally started my first blog.
